Volunteer at Alpha
Are you passionate about supporting expectant parents and young families? We would love to have you join the Alpha Grand Rapids volunteer team! While some roles involve working directly with people and others are more behind-the-scenes, we have a spot for you. Each volunteer role is crucial and makes a huge impact on the individuals and families that walk through our doors. We also have volunteer opportunities for families, small groups, classes, sports teams, organizations, and more!
Please Note: A background check is required for all volunteers. Mentors and coaches must also complete all necessary paperwork in addition to our Volunteer Training Program prior to meeting with clients.
Volunteer Training
All Alpha Grand Rapids volunteers are required to complete Volunteer Training. This ensures every volunteer is well-equipped to serve with confidence, compassion, and excellence.
- Training Structure: Volunteer Training includes four classroom sessions followed by a period of experiential learning. These sessions are offered twice per year—typically in late winter and early fall—with both morning and evening options available to accommodate your schedule.
- What You’ll Learn: During training, you’ll get to know AGR’s services, policies, and documentation procedures. You'll also develop essential skills like empathy, active listening, and relationship-building. It might sound intense, but don't worry—training is engaging, practical, and even fun!
Which Sessions Should I Attend?
Training requirements vary depending on your volunteer role:
- All volunteers are required to attend Session 1.
- Non-client-facing volunteers only need to complete Session 1.
- Volunteers working with clients in group settings must complete Sessions 1 and 2.
- Volunteers serving as mentors or coaches to parents one-on-one are required to complete all four sessions.
Important to Note: Completion of training does not guarantee placement in a specific volunteer role. Volunteer assignments are determined by availability, need, experience, and fit. While we hope to place every trained volunteer, we strive to ensure the best match for both our team and the individuals we serve.
Please note: Potential volunteers are not always approved for all roles. Completing our training program does not guarantee a specific role. Selection for various positions is based on availability, need, experience, and fit.
