Human beings have a desire for connection. We’ve all felt this before; when walking into a new school, starting a new job, attending an event by yourself, or processing a difficult time. The need to connect with someone (or something) else is powerful, and not getting that need met can leave us feeling isolated, sad, angry and afraid.

So what is connection? According to Merriam-Webster, to connect is “to join together.” Although we might picture face-to-face relationships when we think of connections, there are many ways to connect in today’s world. With the rise of social media, connecting seems easier than ever! We can instantly comment on pictures, “like” statuses, and send messages to people around the world without leaving the couch. We can share our opinions, invite people to events, and update everyone on life changes with the click of a button.

Here at AWC, social media has been a great way to reach people. Just last week we found ourselves running very low on baby food with only one container left on the shelf. We put up a post on Facebook asking people to donate baby food, and we were blown away by the results. Within 24 hours, 85 containers of baby food were donated. Within a week, 299 containers were delivered! The connections we’ve made through social media have been a huge blessing; we love being able to share stories, express our needs, give updates, and thank the amazing people that make up our community.

When it comes to connections, however, social media is not our main focus. From mentoring to support groups and classes, every program we offer our clients is built on the foundation of relationships. Mentors have been told by clients, “I’ve never told anyone this before,” or “I don’t have anyone else to talk to but you.” Students have expressed to their tutors, “I don’t want to leave this class! This feels like my family!”

It’s incredible to see what happens through the power of connection. At AWC, we love to reach out to people who may have never experienced the joy and comfort of developing genuine relationships. We hope to demonstrate the beauty of connection to others who are searching for the same thing.
